The Patriot Act - Spiffy name, Tyranny Act would be more honest
The Patriot Act... Where to start with such a thing. It sounds goood. But that's the way it works. Give it a name that sounds like something everyone should want. Everyone's a patriot, so the Patriot Act must be good. Well the bad news is the Patriot Act has nothing to do with being a patriot. There's no connection at all. Worse still is the fact that no "patriot" could ever agree with the Patriot Act. Almost every section of it does something to trounce on the Constitution. It's tyranny in action. The way in which Congress original passed it is no less than some form of criminal negligence and possibly closer to treason. Congress has a responsibility to defend the Constitution (as does the President) and to represent the People and to act in their best interest.
Yet Congress passed the Patriot Act originally and could not possibly have actually read and comprehended it. The Patriot Act is a massive document. Not only that it's a massive document that is a long way from an 800 page Dr. Seuss book. It contains very complex interlocking language that must be studied to be understood. With that being true and the time that passed between it's introduction and passage, it could not have actually been reviewed by our Congress before being voted on. Yet they voted anyway.
It's tragic that we have so readily forgetten where we came from. The wisdom of our Founders and so cheaply traded (at least to date) all that our forefathers fought and died to acheive. Our education system has a lot to do with this... I don't believe it's an accident either.
From: How Tyranny Came to America.
One of the great goals of education is to initiate the young into the conversation of their ancestors; to enable them to understand the language of that conversation, in all its subtlety, and maybe even, in their maturity, to add to it some wisdom of their own.
The modern American educational system no longer teaches us the political language of our ancestors. In fact our schooling helps widen the gulf of time between our ancestors and ourselves, because much of what we are taught in the name of civics, political science, or American history is really modern liberal propaganda. Sometimes this is deliberate. Worse yet, sometimes it isn’t. Our ancestral voices have come to sound alien to us, and therefore our own moral and political language is impoverished. It’s as if the people of England could no longer understand Shakespeare, or Germans couldn’t comprehend Mozart and Beethoven.
You should make a point of reading the whole posting of How Tyranny Came to America, it's a well thought out piece that can open your eyes or reinforce what you already know to be true.
But back to the point. We all have a responsibility to protect that which keeps us safe, that which is the cornerstone of our society. The Constitution of the United States. I promise you will shall all miss the protection it used to provide us in the very near future.
Try this on for size:
"A permanent police force, to be known as the 'United States Secret Service Uniformed Division,'" empowered to "make arrests without warrant for any offense against the United States committed in their presence" ... "or for any felony cognizable under the laws of the United States if they have reasonable grounds to believe that the person to be arrested has committed or is committing such felony."
If that doesn't bother you, it should. If it doesn't bother you then I suggested stopping right here and go read the Constitution and pay close attention to the Bill of Rights. Then read the text above again and see if it bothers you. Now some would read the excerpt of Section 605 of the stengthened Patriot Act and say, "Ah it's OK that just gives 'em the ability to arrest terrorists easier." Well OK, it might do that, but it also makes it (as does the rest of the Patriot Act) very easy to label you, me, or anyone else a terrorist or threat. It then totally circumvents things like probable cause and the issuance of a warrant.

In the full text you will find that the expanded Secret Service Federal Police can arrest you without warrant or any better cause than 'reasonable' belief that you've commited a crime:
(11) An event designated under section 3056(e) of title 18 as a special event of national significance.
So what does that section say?
(e)(1) When directed by the President, the United States Secret Service is authorized to participate, under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury, in the planning, coordination, and implementation of security operations at special events of national significance, as determined by the President.(2) At the end of each fiscal year, the President through such agency or office as the President may designate, shall report to the Congress--(A) what events, if any, were designated special events of national significance for security purposes under paragraph (1); and(B) the criteria and information used in making each designation.
This is all cause for massive alarm. If we don't begin to hold our Government acountable to us. If we don't restore the Constitutional Republic, then we are doomed to suffer tyranny.
