Dubai - The Ports Deal
Lies, lies, and more lies.
How can you trust an Administration that never seems to tell you the truth? Not just to start with, but even after an issue comes to the surface, they respond with half truths. These half-truths are later revealed and slowly but surely you can piece together all the parts of the lies. Or can you? To say that we can assumes we ever uncover all the parts.
It's funny to me because if we put it in the context of our daily lives our reactions would be much different.
Let's say you're dating someone and there is this constant pattern of only telling you part of the story. You later unmask that your 'friend' hasn't been honest with you. You piece together most of the story and confront them. They promise not to lie or omit in the future. A week later it starts all over again.
How long would you continue to date this person?
You got an employee that works for you and they engage in this same pattern of behavior. How long would they work for you?
Yet the Government does it on a regular basis and we do nothing.
Let's look at yet another pack of lies this Administration has handed us and areas where they have not been totally honest. Actions that I can see no reason for other than to cover up what may not be right to do.
First it was six U.S. Ports and the President was very clear that the port operations would be run by DP World not the port security. In addition the deal was run through post haste in a manner designed to circumvent too many questions being asked. Behavior that certainly lack integrity.
From: Bush Shrugs Off Objections to Port Deal
Brushing aside objections from Republicans and Democrats alike, President Bush endorsed the takeover of shipping operations at six major U.S. seaports by a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates. He pledged to veto any bill Congress might approve to block the agreement.
The president on Tuesday defended his administration's earlier approval of the sale of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. to Dubai Ports World, despite concerns in Congress it could increase the possibility of terrorism at American ports.
The sale expected to be finalized in early March would put Dubai Ports in charge of major shipping operations in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia. "If there was any chance that this transaction would jeopardize the security of the United States, it would not go forward," Bush said
OK so there's some problems here, one we're still talking six ports and now it appears to be more like 21, including two that ship goods to our military overseas. An omission? A lie? Does it matter which?
Twenty-one ports not six: UAE terminal takeover extends to 21 ports
In addition the President has continued to insist that DP World (the Dubai company) would run port operations not security.
It would appear the President has forgotten that he just recently put a DP World Executive in a role that does manage port security issues. Even better it comes straight from a DP World Press Release.
DP WORLD EXECUTIVE NOMINATED FOR Prestigious US GOVT POSITION
Dave Sanborn, has been nominated by US President George W. Bush to serve as Maritime Administrator a key transportation appointment reporting directly to Norman Mineta the Secretary of Transportation and Cabinet Member.
Well that's dated "Dubai, 24 January 2006" seems like a serious credibility issue to me.
Lies, lies, lies. If this were an employee of mine or someone I were dating, they'd be hitting the highway at this point. The number one rule of leadership is always maintain your credibility. I don't know, you must judge for yourself, but I see none here. This like so many other things coming from our Government seem littered with half-truths, omissions, and generally want to assume we're all stupid. At least that's what it looks like to me.
Perhaps the most troubling aspect of all to me is once again the President has flaunted what he seems to feel is his Supreme Power over all of us. He once again has said he will simply veto any law that Congress tries to put in place to block this deal. Just as with the Patriot Act when he stated he would enforce it whether Congress renewed it or not. We are at risk. This is not the behavior of a United States President.
